Raising Mealworms and Superworms

April 11, 2009

Mealworms and superworms are known for a great source of protein both for human and animals. Do you know how this organisms are cultured by companies distributing this kind of protein source? Here’s some simple procedures I extracted from a Mealworm company from China from the article, How to raise mealworms. Here is the summary of the said instruction:

  1. Secure a plastic container that should contain punch holes with mosquito net or cheese cloth to make the air circulation possible and prevent condensation. This container will serve as the housing for the nest of the organism and larva production.
  2. Oat or wheat kernels, rolled oats or whole wheat flour, wheat germ or powdered milk and brewer’s yeast are the usual mixed grains to feed mealworms.
  3. Supply water and provide bits of vegetables or fruit and replace it when mold growth appears.
  4. Obtain mealworm larvae when they started to become ready with a starter culture which you can buy from pet shops
These procedure are for starter, if you want a comprehensive procedure about mealworm and superworms culture - you can visit the link specified on the post which is the source of this article.
